Clinical Studies on the Treatment of Cancer and Intractable Surgical Infection by Regional Perfusion

Abstract
|
|
|
Twenty cases of various cancer and 10 cases of intractable surgical infection were perfused with chemotherapeutic agents utilizing an extra-corporeal circuit. Amounts of leakage during regional perfusion into the systemic circulation, and hematologic effects and liver functions following perfusions were observed.
Results were summarized as follows:
1. Leakages were 25% to 37% at 30 minutes after the onset of perfusion for lower and upper extremities where tourniquets were easily applied. However, in external carotid and pelvicareas where tourniquets were not applicable, leakages were high ranging from 75% to 92%.
2. Decrease of hemoglobin and red blood cell counts. was greater in the higher leakage group than that of lower leakage group. Transient increase of white blood cell counts in two days after perfusion was followed. by gradual decrease. but in two weeks, they recoverd to normal range. Platelets counts showed no significant charges.
3. Liver function tests showed almost no changes.
